Homecoming at Penn State Through the Ages

Year after year, thousands of students and alumni join together to celebrate Penn State’s homecoming. Have you been back to State College lately?

Phi Kappa Sigma wants to hear from you! What is the best place to visit when you are back in town? Is it Champs? Do you have a fun homecoming throwback to share with everyone? Let us know by emailing us at [email protected]!

Haven’t been back to State College lately? No worries! Now is the perfect opportunity to plan your next get-together with some old Skulls alumni. Use our directory to contact your old buddies or leave a note in the comments for us to include in the next communication!

Only a few months left in this give year! Get on the Honor Roll now before it’s too late!

Brothers, we have less than 3 months left in our 2023 giving year, which began on 1/1/2023. So, we are reaching out to you with one last reminder to donate before the giving year ends on 12/31/2023 and earn your spot on the Honor Roll of Donors. Alumni support is the heart and soul of our fraternity, here’s why giving back is so important…

Because being a donor is being a leader—seeing your name on the Honor Roll of Donors inspires others to join you by making their own gift. You don’t have to stop there, make a personal invitation to a fellow brother to join you on the Honor Roll. Remind him that without alumni support, we cannot carry on.

Because—if you’re like me—your fraternity experience helped to shape the person you are today and gave YOU invaluable gifts like leadership experience, interpersonal skills, lifelong friendships and more. Because of these invaluable experiences, we remain resolved that as long as Penn State exists, Phi Kappa Sigma will thrive there.

We would like to thank those brothers who have generously contributed to Phi Kappa Sigma Penn States this giving year. Can you help us reach our goal before 12/31/2023?

If you have not yet made your gift, add your name to the Honor Roll by using any of the following methods:

  • Click here to give online;
  • Call our toll-free Donation Hotline at 1-800-975-6699;
  • Mail a check to our donation processing center:

Search by name: Have you lost touch with your old roommate? Use the advanced search feature to find by first or last name.

Over and over, we hear that being part of Phi Kappa Sigma was a formative part of life at Penn State … and the rest of our lives. Get reconnected to an old friend this year. You’ll be glad you did.

HOLD THE DATE – Alumni Gathering in State College for PSU/OSU away game October 21

By Ty Torres

“Ever find yourself missing football Saturdays at the House? The buildup for a good game, the camaraderie, the frosty beverages and the overall revelry? Well, we have just the solution for you. Come on out to The House during the PSU/OSU weekend for a gathering of Skull Alumni old and young. Looks like we already have a good crew coming out, but it will always be better with you there, so make this happen! Everyone is welcome, including friends of Skull House!  More details to follow.

Now I can already hear what some of you are saying. “I’m already going up for a game this year and can’t make it.” Oh, we’re sorry. We didn’t know there was a limit on how many times you were allowed to come out to The House to say hello to your old friends and reminisce while watching the big game. Or maybe you’re more like, “I’d really like to come out, but I’m just so busy these days so I’ll just go to the next one.” So when will that be, exactly? Seriously, how many more of these do you think will happen before we’re all too old to make it up the front steps? Rally, we say! WHAT WOULD BOCCI SAY?

So now that we’ve convinced you to come, if you need a place to stay, you’re in luck. We were able to get a block of rooms at the Hyatt Place State College (only a few blocks from 234 E. Beaver) for attendees. Reservations can be made by either calling Central Reservations at 1-888-492-8847 and referencing the code G-SKUL or going online at https://statecollege.place.hyatt.com

If you book online, type in group code G-SKUL to make sure you get the group discount under the “Corporate or Group Code” option from the drop-down menu (which is listed as the last one) beneath the dates. Book your room by September 29th so you don’t miss out!

Look for updates on Facebook at our “Skull House PSI chapter 1980s-90s” page as we get closer or contact Iva Saltzman-Kelman (610-517-9045) or Ty Torres (949-300-7307) directly.”

Celebrating 173 Years of Phi Kappa Sigma

This year, Phi Kappa Sigma celebrates 173 years since its founding on August 16, 1850, at the University of Pennsylvania.

Fascinated by the prospect of fraternal relations with his fellowman, Mitchell set out to found a new, secret order in the restricted life of the university at that time. His papers indicate that on August 16, 1850, he had determined to install a new order on the campus in the fall of 1850.

Between August 16 and October 19, 1850, Mitchell sought six other men to constitute the Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma. The formal organization of Alpha Chapter occurred at the home of James Bayard Hodge on October 19, 1850.

While the official founding date of the Fraternity is August 16, 1850, Phi Kappa Sigma began celebrating “Founder’s Day” on October 19 as a commemoration of the establishment of Alpha Chapter.

In those 173 years, brothers have been initiated into the fraternity across over 32 active chapters worldwide. Psi chapter is proud to be a part of this broad, enduring brotherhood, and we look forward to a bright future for our fellow Phi Kaps.

Back to school with Phi Kappa Sigma

With summer winding down, it means a new school year is right around the corner. Soon, another class of students will be back on campus and in town, ready to experience another great year at Penn State.

Of course, students aren’t the only ones who will be back in town!

What are some places around State College that you can’t wait to get back to this year? Are you planning any nights at Champs or Café 210 with your Phi Kappa Sigma buddies?

Is your favorite hangout spot the same as it was when you were a student? How have things changed around town in the years since you graduated?

We want to know! Share your thoughts with us HERE and be featured in an upcoming eLetter!

The older we get, the more we need our friends—and the harder it is to keep them

When you’re in middle age, you start to realize how very much you need your friends. After decades of relentless striving — kids, house, career, spouse — we find ourselves coming up for breath at some point in these middle decades. And what remains? With any luck, our friends.

An Atlantic Monthly article (do yourself a favor and read it at tinyurl.com/lifelongfriends), says that according to the Stanford Center on Longevity, those of us over 40 have aged out of the friendship-collecting business, which tends to peak in the tumbleweed stage of life, and move into the friendship-enjoying business, luxuriating in the relationships that survived as we put down roots.

The problem? Those friendships are awfully hard-won. Life’s significant upheavals and changes can prove too much for many friendships to withstand. As years go by, some of the dearest people in your life have gently faded away.

But these bonds with friends are more than an extra in your life story — they are the story. Over and over, we hear stories of how Phi Kappa Sigma friends drove overnight to be in weddings, wept together at funerals, cheered at the news of new babies, toasted promotions, and gathered together in adversity. In a nutshell: the friendships we gained — and still have — with our fraternity brothers are exquisitely rare in today’s world.

Author Jennifer Senior says, “Practically everyone who studies friendship says this in some form or another: What makes friendship so fragile is also exactly what makes it so special. You have to continually opt in. That you choose it is what gives it its value.”

Our Skull House friendships have seen us through so much, but don’t take them for granted. Take a minute to text or call your roommate, or intramural teammate, and tell them that you are thinking of them. Our friendships have fueled these decades since graduation… Let’s keep it going.
